Air Safety, Aerospace & Defense

NASA is not only responsible for the space program, but also for Aeronautics and Aerospace. Both carry a multitude of commercial, industrial and military applications. The first A in NASA stands for Aeronautics.

NASA research has been used, for example, to make military aircraft fly more efficiently at high speeds. NASA and the Department of Defense have an agreement to develop an integrated national strategy for managing their respective aeronautical test facilities.

In 2007, the first National Plan for Aeronautics Research and Development and Related Infrastructure priorities defines goals aligned with the principles of Mobility, National Security and Homeland Defense, Safety, and Energy and Environment.
